Richard has held senior academic appointments (to Principal Research Fellow) at several universities managing clinical research projects, health services research and program evaluations. His research interests include quality of health care, medico-legal and clinical risk management, public health policy and strategy. Academically, at present he is involved in projects at La Trobe University.

 

Author of “Health Care and Notions of Risk” (Therapeutic Guidelines Limited 2004), Richard is a member of the Medico-Legal Society of Victoria, the Immunisation Coalition and served two terms on Council of the Australasian Epidemiological Association. He provides expert witness reports to assist Courts as required.

 

Recent engagements requiring epidemiological skills, Richard provided input into the Restaurant and Caterer’s Association “COVID-19 Best-Practice Guidelines” for reopening, published in May 2020. He has also performed roles as a senior researcher with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and risk management with Australian medical indemnity insurers, Avant Insurance Limited and MDA National. Former roles include manager of a centre for applied gerontology, Director of Research and Analysis for a Patient Safety database (AIMS) and fieldwork managing a project that showed that the population of Central Australia had the highest incidence of end-stage renal disease globally.

 

Currently Richard is a consultant epidemiologist to the DVA Research and Development section conducting peer reviews of contracted research and health program evaluations. Recent engagements requiring epidemiological skills applied to medicolegal and regulatory settings include with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), Australian medical indemnity insurers and expert witness in various legal cases.
